OVIE TO SPEAK ON SPORTS AND SUSTAINABILITY TODAY AT WHITE HOUSE

  • Press Post
  • Thursday Jul 19, 2012

Today, July 19, 2012, Pro Bowl NFL Fullback Ovie Mughelli will be a guest speaker at the White House. The Obama Administration at the White House will bring together sports industry leaders to discuss Sports and Sustainability to celebrate industry successes in saving energy, reducing waste, and adopting sustainable practices in professional sports venues and events across the country. The event will feature senior Administration officials including Lisa P. Jackson, Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and Jon Carson, Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, as well as professional sports leaders along with Mughelli, including Mike Richter, former goalie for the New York Rangers; and Bob Nutting, Chairman of the Board of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

To watch the event live, visit now to www.whitehouse.gov/live

Sports industry leaders are implementing innovative sustainability strategies that are promoting healthier communities and saving organizations money on their energy bills. Some sports venues have been able to divert up to 90 percent of their waste from landfills to recycling facilities, install renewable energy sources such as solar panel arrays and wind turbines, and save as much as $500,000 annually in utility costs. For example, organizations such as the St. Louis Cardinals and the Portland Trail Blazers have cut their stadium energy use by 24 percent and 30 percent, respectively.

"As I prepare for the White House, I must admit the thought is a little intimidating even for someone known to be fearless on the football field," says Mughelli. "However, my passion for a sustainable future are stronger. It's an honor to have been chosen as a sports figure and leader of the environment, and I hope we can capture the attention of the American public."

In the first half, Ryan hit FB Ovie Mughelli for a one-yard touchdown, marking Ryan’s eighth scoring strike of the season and the 74th of his career. The Pro Bowl signal caller has now thrown at least one touchdown in 23 of his last 25 games, including each of the last five games this season. It was Mughelli’s second receiving touchdown of the season and the fifth of his career. He caught the game-winning touchdown against the Eagles in the Falcons home opener on 9/18. The last time Mughelli caught two touchdowns in a season was in 2006 as a member of the Baltimore Ravens.

A Second Touchdown!

  • Nfl Post
  • Tuesday Oct 18, 2011
Fullback Ovie Mughelli’s touchdown catch in the second quarter of the Panthers game on Sunday allowed the Falcons to take back the lead over the Panthers. A fullback’s primary job is to block for the running back and they rarely have an opportunity to make a play, let alone catch a touchdown pass. Sunday’s touchdown was Mughelli’s sixth such reception of his career: ”This is the second time I’ve had two touchdowns in a season, so I’m trying to get that third. It’s just like we practice it. I run my route, Matt sees me, I’m open and he throws it. It was kind of high, but fullbacks don’t get the ball that much, so when it’s thrown anywhere in your vicinity you better catch it.”

Trailing 31-21 in the fourth quarter, QB Matt Ryan led the Falcons on a 12-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard touchdown pass to FB Ovie Mughelli, his fourth of the game. The touchdown cut the Eagles lead to three at 31-28 with 10:45 remaining in the game. Atlanta’s defense forced the Eagles to punt on the next drive, giving the offense the ball back with 8:12 remaining in the game. RB Michael Turner put the Falcons within striking distance with a season-long 61-yard run down to the Eagles 26-yard line. Five plays later, Turner punched in a 3-yard touchdown run to give Atlanta the lead. The win marked the 14th time that Ryan has led the Falcons on a game-winning drive in the fourth quarter or overtime and improved his record at the Georgia Dome to 21-2, while the Falcons improved to 34-16 overall under head coach Mike Smith.

ATLANTA – May 16, 2011 – Families are encouraged to make plans this weekend for an educational adventure as the 7th Annual Alive! Expo at the Georgia World Congress Center takes off on May 21-22. Ovie Mughelli, Pro Bowl fullback for the Atlanta Falcons and Eco-Athlete, will be making his third appearance to the annual Atlanta Expo this weekend while hosting among the largest and definitely the most physically challenging exhibits combining both sports and environmental education. This year’s platform is set to take over 600 kids in two days through a rigourous, one-hour fitness mini-camp, including football mini-drills, life skills, and environmental classrooms.

The Ovie Mughelli Foundation, founded by Mughelli, has developed and executed several environmental programs throughout the Atlanta and Charleston communities geared to educate youth. Among the most popular and nationally recognized is the Ovie Mughelli Foundation’s “Recycle on the Run”, launched in early 2009, designed to give a hands on depiction of "eco-fitness" blending football exercises while learning why to recycle and what kinds of things must be recycled to save our Earth.

This weekend’s Sports Exhibit will feature seven instructions in a camp format. Parents can enjoy a little time out, for about an hour, while allowing their kids to participate in “Recycle on the Run” and six other activities hosted by Mughelli, including environmental games, drawing projects, contests and the opportunity to meet other NFL athletes.

“We continue our mission to encourage kids and families to “actively” make practical lifestyle changes for our planet,” says Mughelli. “As we gear up for this year’s Alive! Expo we wanted to offer a more robust set of activities like our popular Charleston football and environmental camp. We hope to leave kids with some invaluable lessons about the environment in a fun and insightful way, which will help them make a conscious effort for restoring our beautiful Earth.”

The 7th Annual Alive! Expo Atlanta is "The Natural Products & Green Living" consumer show packed with education, information and fun for the whole family! Every year Alive! Expo brings together local and national companies that specialize in natural products, organic foods, Green and Eco, as well as health & wellness professionals, health food retailers and community non-profit organizations. Alive Expo is a fun and exciting weekend event for the entire family. Alive Expo’s mission is to inspire and encourage individuals to embrace a life of health, wellness, fitness, environmental and green living through awareness of natural, organic and alternative products and solutions, advanced medicine research, education, nutrition, exercise and lifelong benefits of living a green, clean and healthy lifestyle.

By Melissa Ruggieri

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

When Super Bowl Sunday rolls around, Atlanta Falcons fullback Ovie Mughelli can often be found outside – not tossing around a pigskin, but barbecuing some.

Whether it’s ribs, chicken, hot dogs or vegetables, it’s getting flamed, usually by Mughelli. Unless it’s raining or snowing.

“Then,” he said with a chuckle, “I get somebody else to do it.”

But this Sunday, the Pro Bowl standout responsible for one of the seven touchdowns scored by the NFC in last weekend’s gridiron showcase, isn’t worrying about how many packages of Nathan’s Famous to buy – he’s in Dallas to attend Super Bowl XLV.

Atlanta Falcons Ovie Mughelli Makes Pro Bowl 2011 Roster and Makes History

First Pro Bowl for Mughelli and First Pro Bowl Fullback for the Atlanta Falcons

ATLANTA – December 28, 2010 - Ovie Mughelli, Fullback for the Atlanta Falcons, has been selected for the 2011 Pro Bowl in the NFC. This is Mughelli’s first Pro Bowl nomination in his eighth-year career in the National Football League. Mughelli also has made history for the Atlanta Falcons, as the team’s first ever Fullback to be selected in to Pro Bowl. A Wake Forest graduate where Mughelli got his first taste of the Fullback position, the NFC Pro Bowl selection is a major milestone after much success as a starting, lead blocker for the Falcons offense.

“It is an extreme honor to make the Pro Bowl this year and to be considered the best Fullback in the NFC, especially with such a high caliber of Fullbacks," says Mughelli. "This is something I've been working toward since I entered the NFL, and there are no words to describe how excited I am to finally reach this goal. Since college I've watched great Pro Bowl Fullbacks like Moose Johnson, Lorenzo Neal and Mike Alstott separate themselves from average by being more than just a blocker - but being a well-rounded asset to the team. I want to thank my teammates, especially my O-line, Michael Turner, Jason Snelling and Matt Ryan, and I thank the whole Falcons organization for believing in my ability to help the Falcons win, and giving me an opportunity to play for the greatest team in the NFL."

ATLANTA - December 10, 2010 - The Ovie Mughelli Foundation has reached its most significant milestone to-date as the responsible party for donating an earth-friendly playground and athletic field for the students of Ron Clark Academy (RCA). The groundbreaking ceremony for this playground will take place at RCA on Tuesday, December 14, 2010, at 11:30am Eastern. The address is 228 Margaret Street Southeast, Atlanta. At a time when the prevalence of childhood obesity is at its highest, together RCA and the Ovie Mughelli Foundation will address the physical education needs to combine with the already rigorous academic curriculum of the Academy.

Ron Clark, the Ovie Mughelli Foundation, school executives, and several of the school's largest donors will attend the groundbreaking ceremony. Clark and Mughelli are expected to speak and following will be the outlining of plans for the playground.

Ovie Mughelli is the Atlanta Falcons starting fullback, and he is also rated the #2 Eco-Athlete in the world by Planet Green.com. Ron Clark has been called "America's Educator," is a New York Times bestselling author, and his teaching experiences have been the subject of the uplifting film, The Ron Clark Story, starring Matthew Perry.

Consistent with the Ovie Mughelli Foundation's environmental responsibility, the playground will be a "Green" facility, including NewGrass®, an industry-leading, artificial grass solution. Shady Grove Landscaping Company is the on-site construction manager of the project, and there are a couple dozen volunteers assigned to the project as well. The playground is scheduled for completion in the summer 2011.

"The Playground is part of a larger movement to do what we can to revitalize our planet," says Ovie Mughelli. We want to help our future generation make the practical lifestyle changes to be more environmentally-conscious and give them the resources to do so."

"The Ron Clark Academy couldn't be more thrilled with the donation of our new athletic field, and we are extremely grateful to the Ovie Mughelli Foundation for recognizing the importance of keeping our young people healthy and physically fit. This field will enhance our athletic programs at RCA in enormous ways, and we are honored the donation is coming from Ovie Mughelli - a role-model that makes the Falcons and all of Atlanta proud."

ATLANTA - Monday, April 26, 2010 - Visitors to the 6th Annual Alive! Expo at the Georgia World Congress Center are about to find out that environmental fitness and football can work hand and hand. Ovie Mughelli, starting fullback for the Atlanta Falcons and Eco-Athlete, will be making his second appearance to the annual Atlanta Expo on May 15-16 while hosting a large sports section full of physical activities that also challenge guests to learn about the environment.

The Ovie Mughelli Foundation, founded by Mughelli, has launched several environmental programs and exercises geared to educate youth. Among these exercises is Ovie’s Kids Challenge "Recycle on the Run", a fun blend of fitness skills while learning why to recycle and what kinds of things must be recycled to save our Earth. Additionally, the sports section will have raffles, contests, drawing projects and the opportunity to meet other NFL athletes throughout the two-day event.

Earth Day Kids Fest 2010 at the Chattahoochee Nature Center was a huge success! Over 1500 attendees of kids, parents and community members enjoyed a day filled with interactive games, demonstrations in the pavilion and OMF's "Recycle on the Run" obstacle course.

The highlight of the "R&R" was when Ovie Mughelli(Foundation President) and Blakely of the Atlanta Beat had a friendly competition. The race was neck and neck with about a second in time difference. Both of the challengers completed the course and successfully answered the final "Environmental Trivia" question at the end.

Look for the "Recycle on the Run" Obstacle Course in the OMF Kids Zone during the Alive Expo.
